Eastside Community Connection (ECC)
This year the EastSideBoil is teaming up with the Eastside Community Connection (ECC) to help give back to the neighborhood that has given us so much.
Therefore, on April 24th 2010 the ESB will be having it’s first ever clothing and food drive for the ECC. Spring is the perfect time to clean out your closets of everything that hasn’t been touched in ages and help others who are in need.
What you can do
ECC’s food pantry serves over 250 people each week. With the current economic climate, your food donations are more important than ever. The ECC could use as much of the following as possible:
- Diapers
- cereal/oatmeal
- canned fruit, vegetables, soup
- peanut butter
- dry soup (i.e. Raman)
- macaroni and cheese
- toilet paper
Neighborhood Information
- 39% of all East Austin children 18 and younger live below the poverty line
- 29% of all East Austin individuals live below the poverty line
(compared to 11% in Austin at-large)
Charity Information
Since opening our doors on March 10, 2004, Eastside has served over 1100 different families (that’s over 4000 different clients!). Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 4-6pm, student volunteers interview clients, distribute groceries, and read books with kids in the lobby!
A free 3-day supply of food is available to anyone who walks through our doors. To receive further assistance (once every two weeks) clients must live in East Austin (78702, 78721, 78722, 78723) and meet certain income requirements. The Food Pantry program is designed to stabilize a family in times of food insecurity. Eastside Community Connection will encourage clients to strive for long-term independence from social services through education.
